Cognition Is Not Computation: The Argument from Irreversibility
نویسندگان
چکیده
The dominant scientific and philosophical view of the mind — according to which, put starkly, cognition is computation — is refuted herein, via specification and defense of the following new argument: Computation is reversible; cognition isn’t; ergo, cognition isn’t computation. After presenting a sustained dialectic arising from this defense, we conclude with a brief preview of the view we would put in place of the cognition-is-computation doctrine. ∗We are indebted to Bill Rapaport, Pat Hayes, Ken Ford, Marvin Minsky, Jim Fahey, two anonymous referees (who provided particularly insightful comments), and many Rensselaer students. These people provided trenchant objections which saw to the evolution of the present version from a rather inauspicious primogenitor.

Cosmological argument in proving the existence of God from Imam Khomeini's (RA) point of view
This article reviews Cosmological argument in proving the existence of God from the viewpoint of Imam Khomeini (RA). At first, various views to the existence of God are reviewed and then its etymology will be reviewed. Cosmological argument proves God through universal premises about truth and world and and the Movement Argument, Casual Argument and Necessity and Possibility Argument are dif...
متن کاملThe Role of Noise in Biosystems Control
This paper discusses the role of noise in biosystems control. True noise and noise due to interference of unwanted processes are differentiated. The existence of true noise was denied by a claim by Laplace almost 200 years ago. This paper presents a simple argument to demonstrate that Laplace’s claim can neither be proven or disproven. It is not a physical fact but rather an epistemological cho...
متن کاملThinking as Evidence for the Probability of the Existence of a God: An Argument from Unnaturalness for Necessity
The objective of this article is to show that it is justified to assert that the existence of God is plausible, considering the fact that thinking itself is an immediate outcome (effect) of a thinker (cause). This idea may seem evident, but it is in fact challenged by certain claims of cognitive philosophers who aver that our knowledge of necessity and causation is, i...
متن کاملIrreversibility in Reversible Systems
We present an overview of recent work together with J. Hoffman, A. Logg and R. Scott developing a new approach towards resolving the classical paradox of irreversibility in formally reversible Hamiltonian systems such as inviscid fluid models and particle models. We base our solution on finite precision computation in the form of General Galerkin G2, instead of statistical mechanics, which is t...
متن کاملStatistical models as cognitive models of individual differences in reasoning
There are individual differences in reasoning which go beyond dimensions of ability. Valid models of cognition must take these differences into account, otherwise they characterise group mean phenomena which explain nobody. The gap is closing between formal cognitive models, which are designed from the ground up to explain cognitive phenomena, and statistical models, which traditionally concern...
